Psalm 136 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever
Our righteous, sovereign God is truly a God of mercy and compassion! When those situations arise that I don’t understand, I rest in the knowledge that God is merciful! I praise Him that it is because of His mercy that the fears and frustrations of this world don’t consume me, because His compassions fail not! I can depend on Him every morning to show me His mercy anew!
So is His mercy only for Christians? Obviously John 3:16 gives the quick answer to that! For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Wow, talk about compassion! Thank you, Lord, for Your mercy and love! Thank You for not giving me what I deserve! When we give our lives to Christ, accepting His death, burial, and resurrection to save us from our sinfulness, that flood of mercy and love that washes over us through the Holy Spirit brings such peace! We can rest in the sweet peace of God’s ever enduring mercy each night and wake to the promise of God’s fresh new mercies to see us through each day!
God’s enduring mercy is one of His attributes that we should definitely be emulating! The more we read and study God’s Word, the more like Him we become. Yes, life is busy, yes, God has given us earthly responsibilities that take time, and yes, we are sometimes simply too exhausted! But time spent with the Lord is never in vain and always worth it! And while time spent with the Lord is between you and Him… it won’t be hidden… the more we read and study God’s Word, the more like Him we become! Have you ever met someone and instantly knew without being told that they are a Christian? Or have you actually witnessed the transformation of someone whose very being changed from self to selfless as they grew stronger in the knowledge of their Savior? It is exciting to witness! So what we do in secret doesn’t mean others won’t know… For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also Matthew 6:21 & Luke 12:34.
Since I have personally experienced God’s unconditional love and I am blessed by his never ending mercy; and in my quest to be more Christlike, how can I be unloving or unmerciful to others? I cannot, it is simply not possible if I truly love the Lord with all my heart, all my soul, all my strength, and all my mind! And as Luke 10:27 continues (love) thy neighbor as thyself! There it is so very plain and simple… I must love God with all my being, with all I have, and when I do… I must truly love others! It is not enough to say I love others, I must put my love into action! What better way to put action to my love of others than God’s enduring mercy! So His mercy is my mission! We must ask ourselves, “Can others see that I display characteristics of growing closer to God? Do others experience the never ending mercy of God through my words and deeds?”
Heavenly Father, I praise you again for your mercy and compassion! I am grateful for the grace you alone can give. Help me Lord as I wake to your new mercies and compassion each morning. Use me each day to bring the Light of Your love to others with great mercy and compassion. May showing Your mercy ever be my mission on this earth. I love you, Lord… thank You for loving me!
